Students Explore Careers Through a Virtual Reality Scheme

GEAR UP Southern West Virginia announced on 22 February 2026 that it has introduced a new initiative to help students explore potential career options using virtual reality technology.

New River Community and Technical College is supporting the programme by delivering sessions that allow secondary school students to experience possible career pathways while learning about each field. The initiative uses virtual reality simulations that students can access during the school day.

The announcement stated that students can explore a range of career areas, including healthcare, engineering, public safety, and skilled trades. The sessions are designed to provide a simulated experience of different work settings and introduce the requirements associated with each field.

The Virtual Career Exploration events are taking place at participating schools in Wyoming and Mercer counties. In Wyoming County, a session was held at Westside on 23 February during normal school hours.

In Mercer County, PikeView High School is hosting events on 25 February and 10 March during the school day, while Montcalm High School is scheduled to take part on 27 February between 1.20 pm and 3.00 pm. Additional sessions in Wyoming County are planned at Wyoming East on 3 March and 24 March during school hours.

The organisers stated that the virtual programme introduces students to high-demand careers and provides simulated, hands-on experience through virtual scenarios. The sessions also outline the education or training required after high school to enter each career path.

After completing the activity, each student receives an individual career report to support post-secondary planning and career preparation by identifying areas of interest and possible next steps.

Further information about the virtual reality events is available from Tammy Mills, GEAR UP Southern West Virginia Coordinator and Community Outreach at New River Community and Technical College.
